3 best practices to ship air freight

When goods need to be transported over long distances, air cargo can offer several advantages over sea freight. Loading and unloading air cargo is generally a faster and more streamlined process, which translates into a lower risk of damage. In addition, air freight allows goods to arrive at their destination much faster, which generally ensures a more accurate timetable. However, air freight is also known to have its own transportation requirements. To take full advantage of all that air freight has to offer, we’ve compiled a list of the best ways to prepare your shipments so that you can ensure your package arrives at its destination safely, cost-effectively and on time.

Provide a clear consignment

One of the most common problems with air freight shipments is that they are not clearly marked. This can lead to the package being misdirected, left behind or accidentally added to someone else’s shipment. So keep in mind to work with clear labeling that ideally includes printed text.

The best practice is to clearly mark your shipment on both sides with the name, address and phone number of both the sender and the receiving party.

Note that a commercial invoice must be attached for international shipments

If your shipment is for an international destination, it is important to ensure that a commercial invoice is included. Not only will this help you avoid unnecessary delays with customs, but it will also ensure that you are not fined or charged a storage fee while the final parcel is waiting for the correct documentation. To get your shipment through customs as quickly and efficiently as possible, prepare a commercial invoice for all international shipments and double check the contents and value assigned to it.

Make sure the packaging is properly prepared

When preparing the packaging, it is important to choose the right material.

Fibreboard boxes are generally an excellent solution for air freight shipments, although they can be vulnerable to crushing. For fragile goods, therefore, consider choosing an extra robust package. In general, air freight shipments suffer less damage than sea freight, but something can still happen en route. Make sure you have a good protection and minimize open air in the packaging to minimize the risk of damage.
